Health Insurance Society finances

The Health Insurance Association's fiscal year runs from April 1 through March 31 the following year. Its accounts are based on annual expenditures and revenues collected in the same fiscal year, a practice known as single-year accounting.

The largest category of expenditures is insurance benefits, consisting of medical care costs incurred by members when they visit a hospital and various other allowances. Other expenditures include payments and contributions to support medical care for the elderly, health activity expenses, and administrative costs. To help keep these costs down, we ask for the continuing cooperation of our members on the following (and other) points.

If a balance remains following settlement of accounts, the Society is required to add a certain amount to its statutory reserve fund, in preparation for future benefits expenditures. Any remainder may be retained as other reserves or carried over to the following fiscal year.

In the environment surrounding health insurance societies, by aging of the insured person, medical progress and the increase in medical care costs (insurance benefit costs) with the introduction of the new technology, it is expected that it becomes severer with a financial aspect in the years ahead.
AIG Health Insurance Association restrain increasing medical care costs and contribution costs to utilize an important insurance premium taking from the insured persons, and effectively carry out health activities to prevent illness.

Please help us reduce medical care costs

Insurance benefits (70% of medical care costs usually borne by a health insurance association) are estimated to account for over half of the insurance premium income.

You and your family’s health should come first despite your busy schedule. Try to manage your health daily and prevent illness. Please try to visit a doctor and seek early treatment if you unfortunately become ill or injured.

  1. Find a family doctor

Whenever possible, we recommend first visiting your family doctor (primary care doctor). Such a doctor has a good understanding of your past medical history as well as your family’s medical history so as not to miss any changes in your health condition.

  2. See a doctor during office hours

Surcharge will be added if you go see a doctor during late hours after 18:00 on weekdays, or on weekends and holidays. Try to avoid the above hours unless it is an emergency. The same goes for dispensing pharmacy services.

  3. Recommendations for generic drugs

You can now choose from a variety of generic drugs, including authorized generics (AGs) and biosimilars, in addition to ordinary generics.
This will help reduce the burden on members and the Health Insurance Association. See here for more information.

  4. Make sure to receive complete health check-up, health examinations, and health guidance

Please make sure to receive annual health examinations, for the early detection and treatment of diseases. If you are identified as eligible for specific health guidance, take advantage of the health guidance program to restore your resistance to lifestyle-related conditions.
It will not do to avoid these check-ups, making an excuse that you are healthy. This is not only about you and your family but can also cause the increased insurance premium rate for all the Society’s members.
Health insurance associations are legally required to provide insured persons (employees) and dependents (family members) aged 40 and older with specific health checkups and to provide those identified eligible with specific health guidance.
Under current rules, support payments to the medical care system for the advanced elderly vary by about 10%, depending on the previous year’s percentages of members receiving specific health checkups and health guidance and rates of improvement in metabolic syndrome. We ask for your understanding and participation to help protect the Society’s resources.

  5. Start using a Myna health insurance card!

Present your Myna health insurance card at the reception counter to pay even less than with a conventional health insurance card.

Please help us reduce our financial contributions

It used to be enough to bear the medical care costs of your own health insurance plan. Now, health insurance societies are also required to make financial contributions to support National Health Insurance and other plans to which many people over 65 belong.

Japan’s changing demographics mean that the structure of population as viewed as a pyramid is in the process of becoming inverted.

Medical care costs in Japan have ballooned about 70 times in the last 50 years. It is expected to increase by as much as 1 trillion yen per year.
So the AIG Health Insurance Association with many insured persons under the age of 65 will have to provide increasingly more contribution to support National Health Insurance and other plans with many insured persons over 65.

Our contribution will be cut by 12 times the amount of reduction we make by holding down medical care costs for our elderly members aged 65 to 74. We ask for your help in reducing these costs.

Health insurance operations also offer several programs this year as well. So we ask for your active participation.

We would like to hear your opinion

The health insurance association operates in a democratic manner based on insurance premiums we collect from you. Our biggest challenge is to make efficient and productive use of limited financial resources. To that end, it is essential to have many of you involved in various efforts we plan to implement.

Please give the health insurance association your feedback and questions regarding our business operations through committee members at your workplace or by e-mail.
